A directory titled Civic Volunteer Opportunities: Places in our community where you are needed has just been published. As a project of Create the Vision, the joint comprehensive plan to guide growth and development in the City of Centerville and Washington Township for the next 20 years, this directory brings together the government entities for the common purpose to increase volunteerism.
The directory lists a wide range of volunteer opportunities and its publication is a joint project of the City of Centerville and Washington Township, Centerville School District, Centerville-Washington Park District, Hithergreen Senior Center and Centerville-Washington Township Historical Society. At the city, for example, there are volunteer positions within the Police Department and at the Golf Club at Yankee Trace; four boards in the township have opportunities; and volunteers in the school district can help struggling students reinforce and enrich their skills.
Publication of a volunteer directory was called for in the Community Plan developed by Create the Vision’s Steering Committee. Create the Vision’s Implementation Task Force, formed to monitor progress, acted on the strategy, one of 198 in the plan.
“Civic and volunteer efforts are a critical component of any community,” said Brooks Compton, Centerville City Councilmember and Co-Chair of the Implementation Task Force. “These efforts should be celebrated and applauded, while encouraging continued participation.”
The directory fulfills a need cited in the plan, in which lack of civic involvement of the public is due to their unawareness that such opportunities exist.
The directories are free and may be picked up at the Centerville-Washington Public Libraries, the City of Centerville Municipal Building, the Washington Township Government Center and Hithergreen Senior Center.
